If there is one person that can claim he’s running his business because he’s pessimistic about the future, it is Patagonia’s founder Yvon Chouinard.
Patagonia, an outdoor clothing brand with an environmental focus, was founded in 1973 by Yvon Chouinard, who since 1964 had been manufacturing pitons (metal anchors used in rock climbing) that would not damage the rock. While insisting on offering the best quality, the brand has contributed toa sustainable society and natural environment by developing eco-friendly materials and returning 1% of its sales backto society. Patagonia has redefined the role of a company and it continues to inspire the outdoor industry and the world.
“Scientists are telling us that we’re destroying the planet and no one wants to do anything about it. I only have this business because I’m very pessimistic about the future…”
by Yvon Chouinard
With an accumulative amount of no less than a staggering 70 million US dollars donated to environmental projects and organizations, Patagonia is at the forefront of preserving the future by spending 1% of sales to do this. Not many company’s can claim the same. Patagonia is not merely in the business to produce and sell quality goods, but more so to protect the planet. And this philosophy has lost none of its passion and dedication over the 40+ years since Yvon Chouinard started the company.
